Pierre Cardin
Pierre Cardin was born in 1922 in Italy and moved to Paris in 1945. He studied fashion design
under Jeanne Paquin and Elsa Schiaparelli until he went to work for Christian Dior in 1947
where he worked until establishing his own fashion house in 1950 and launched his career by
designing 30 costumes for a prestigious masquerade ball held in Italy in 1951.

Pierre started designing haute couture fashion in 1953 and was greatly influenced by the
Japanese culture after traveling there in 1959. That same year he was expelled from the
Chambre Syndicale for producing ready-to-wear fashion, though he was quickly reinstated. He
resigned from the Chambre Snydicale in 1966 and began to show his collection of fashion in
his own space called the Espace Cardin. The site was also used as a venue for other artists
and shows.

Cardin branched into other areas of design in addition to fashion including designing the
uniforms for a Pakistani airline and special edition vehicle interior for American Motors.

In 1994, Cardin decided to only exhibit his work to a group of select clients and members of the
press at his famous bubble home, located in Cannes. In 2009, after a 15 year hiatus, Cardin
showed a collection of fashion to a select group of 150 people.

Cardin owns the ruins of a castle in Lacoste, which was once the home of the Marquis de
Sade. He was recently in the news after a fall in his home sent him to a hospital in Marseilles.
He is said to be recovering at home and should be back to normal activities in a few weeks.
